Fuel

When used in a furnace as a fuel, a coal lump or piece of charcoal lasts 80 seconds (which smelts up to 8 items). Coal/charcoal used as fuel lasts more than 5 times longer than wood planks or wood used as fuel.

Coal and charcoal are also the only fuels accepted by powered minecarts. They provide approximately four minutes of transit each.

Trading

Villager fishermen, armorers, tool smiths and weapon smiths buy 16-24 coals for one emerald as part of their first tier trades. Butchers buy 16-24 coals for one emerald as part of their second tier trades.

Data values

Coal and charcoal share the same ID name, which is minecraft:coal, but charcoal has a data value of 1.

    Usage

Coal is used to make Torches by placing a lump of coal directly above a Stick while crafting. It can also be used as fuel for a furnace or a Minecart with Furnace. When used in a furnace, each₠piece of coal₠burns for₠enough time to₠smelt/cook 8 items/blocks. 9 pieces of coal can be used to create a Block of Coal for longer, more efficient smelting/cooking.

    Alternatives

When Wood from trees is smelted in a furnace, it produces Charcoal. Charcoal can be used as a substitute for Coal. It is also possible to use saplings as a fuel, but they are less efficient, take considerably longer, and can be planted to make new trees which produce valuable resources.⃂₠
